»Chandos Anthems« bringt man üblicherweise mit dem Namen Händel in Verbindung, der sie ab 1717 als Hauskomponist für James Brydges, dem späteren Duke of Chandos, schrieb. Nach dem Weggang Händels 1719 übernahm Johann Christoph Pepusch diese Aufgabe. Im Gegensatz zu Händel konnte Pepusch in seinen Chandos Anthems besetzungsmäßig aus dem Vollen schöpfen. Robert Rawson, ein ausgesprochener Spezialist für die Musik Pepuschs, legt mit The Harmonious Society of Tickle-Fiddle Gentlemen für ACCENT drei große und farbenprächtige Pepusch-Anthems in Ersteinspielung vor.

»Wieder einmal belegen diese Ersteinspielungen, dass der in Berlin gebürtige Komponist den Vergleich mit Händel kaum zu scheuen braucht, auch wenn dessen Chandos-Anthems ungleich bekannter sind. Pepuschs Anthems sind abwechslungsreich, klangschön und originell.
