Etwa 400 Jahre trennen das Second Booke of Songs or Ayres von John Dowland und die Song Books von John Cage; beide vereinen Stücke von großer expressiver Nüchternheit. Dowland schrieb mit den hier ausgewählten Liedern für zwei Stimmen und Laute intime Dreiergespräche; bei Cage verbirgt sich hinter scheinbarer Einfachheit, die manchmal ans Scherzhafte grenzt, die Konzentration auf die wesentlichen Elemente der Musik, darunter auch die Stille. Thélème, hier im Trio, integriert den berühmten Sänger Sting, mit dem es eine Vorliebe für Lautenlieder teilt, in sein Programm. Seinen Song »Shape of My Heart« interpretiert er in einem Renaissance-Arrangement des Ensembles.
