Die Folklore spielt in Vagn Holmboes Musik eine wichtige Rolle. Das Gleiche gilt für Béla Bartók, und bei beiden Komponisten flossen folkloristische Studien in den Kompositionsprozess ein.
Holmboe ist der einflussreichste dänische Komponist der Generation nach Carl Nielsen, und sein umfangreiches Werk umfasst 12 Sinfonien, Kammerkonzerte und eine lange Reihe von sehr schönen Streichquartetten.
