Im Frühjahr 1992 veröffentlicht Theodorakis die Orchesterfassung für das Ballett Zorbas, einem Auftragswerk für die Arena von Verona. Die von Nikos Kazantzakis verfasste Geschichte über die Freundschaft zwischen dem amerikanischen Touristen John und dem Lebenskünstler Alexis Zorbas hat in der Verfilmung von Michalis Cacojannis eine ganze Generation geprägt. Die Filmmusik begründete den Weltruhm von Mikis Theodorakis.
