„Butter bei die Fische!“
Die heute vielfach praktizierte solistische Besetzung von Chören oder auch nur ein schlanker Kammerchorklang war den Zeitgenossen Mendelssohns völlig fremd, damals kam vielmehr „Butter bei die Fische“. Besonders in England waren daher Massenaufführungen keine Seltenheit. Für seine Einspielung des Elias hat Paul McCreesh konsequenterweise diese Aufführungspraxis (nicht Aufführungstradition!) berücksichtigt. Wie bereits bei seiner hochgelobten Einspielung von Berlioz‘ Requiem weiß der Dirigent die vereinigten Kräfte von über 400 Mitwirkenden zu leiten und erreicht trotz aller Üppigkeit der Besetzung ein erstaunlich transparentes Klangbild.
