Diese Werke, komponiert zwischen 1860 und 1934, erzählen von einer großen Epoche der russischen Musikgeschichte, einer Zeit, als die nationale russische Schule von den „Mächtigen 5“ angeführt wurde (darunter Borodin) und die endete mit Stalins Wutausbrüchen über Shostakovitchs Oper „Lady Macbeth von Minsk“, was dazu führte, dass in der Folge Generationen russischer Komponisten nur noch geduckt und mit äußerster Vorsicht zu Werke gingen.
