Waris Dirie, the Somalia nomad who became a supermodel, and an anti-FGM activist, first came to the world's attention with the publication of her autobiography, Desert Flower . The book was subsequently made into a film and little Safa Nour, from one of the slums of Djibouti in the Horn of Africa, was chosen to play the young Waris.

Saving Safa opens with a letter from Safa, now aged seven, who explains that she is worried that she will undergo FGM in spite of the contract her parents have signed with Dirie's Desert Flower Foundation stating that they will never have their daughter cut. Waris drops everything and flies to Djibouti where she meets Safa's father and mother who thinks her daughter should be cut to stop the community ostracising them.
As Safa was saved from FGM through a contract with her parents, the Foundation believes a thousand other girls can be saved through providing their families with aid in return for a promise not to mutilate their daughters
Biography
Waris Dirie wuchs in einer Nomadenfamilie in der somalischen Wüste auf. Im Alter von fünf Jahren erlebte sie die Qualen der Beschneidung - ein Ritual, an dessen Folgen ihre Schwester und zwei Cousinen gestorben sind. Mit vierzehn floh sie zu Verwandten nach Mogadischu und arbeitete dann vier Jahre als Hausmädchen bei ihrem Onkel in London. Mit achtzehn wurde Waris Dirie als Model entdeckt. Lange war es ihr nicht möglich, darüber zu sprechen, was ihr in jungen Jahren zugestoßen war. Doch nach und nach reifte in Waris Dirie der Entschluss, ihre Leiden vor der Öffentlichkeit nicht mehr länger zu verheimlichen. Sie schrieb ihr Aufsehen erregendes erstes Buch Wüstenblume , das zu einem riesigen Bestseller in 21 Ländern wurde und auch in Deutschland über 100 Wochen auf der Bestsellerliste stand. Heute lebt sie mit ihrem kleinen Sohn in New York und engagiert sich als Sonderbotschafterin der UNO gegen die Beschneidung von Frauen, die noch heute in 28 Ländern der Welt praktiziert wird.
