In these elections, 17, 308 candidates competed for 603 elected positions. The number of participating political parties was around 295 plus 491 political associations. The Venezuelan Comptroller General had banned almost 300 candidates, accused of corruption, from the local elections. The country's Supreme Court ratified the ban. The positions that were not disputed were the government of the state of Amazonas and nine more municipalities because those positions were elected after the 2004 regional elections.
