Biografie
Val McDermid wurde 1955 in Kirkcaldy im schottischen Fife geboren und wuchs dort in einer Bergarbeiterfamilie auf. Nach der Schulzeit begann sie, als erste aus ihrer Familie überhaupt, ein Studium: Englische Literatur am St. Hilda's College in Oxford. Nach Jahren als Literaturdozentin und als Journalistin bei namhaften Zeitungen lebt sie heute als freie Autorin in Manchester und in einem kleinen Dorf an der englischen Nordseeküste. Sie gilt als eine der interessantesten Autorinnen im Spannungsgenre und ist außerdem als Krimikritikerin der BBC, der Times, des Express und der Krimi-Website Tangled Web sowie als Jurymitglied mehrerer Krimipreise eine zentrale Figur in der britischen Krimiszene. Ihre Kriminalromane und Thriller sind weltweit in mehr als 25 Sprachen übersetzt. Für ihr Lebenswerk erhielt sie 2010 die angesehenste Auszeichnung, die es in Großbritannien für Kriminalromane gibt: den Diamond Dagger der britischen Crime Writers' Association.
