Early Masters, Gone Too Soon -- August Macke and the 27 Club
The 27 Club is as tragic as it is legendary. Artists who died at the age of just 27 have joined its ranks. The first names that spring to mind are usually musicians such as Jimi Hendrix or Amy Winehouse. Yet artists including August Macke also belong to this circle of lives cut short. The volume examines selected members of the 27 Club from different perspectives and asks: 'What if?'
Despite his early death, August Macke created an extensive body of work. The Expressionist left behind 600 paintings, thousands of works on paper, sculptures and works of decorative art. Like legendary members of the 27 Club such as Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain, he produced pioneering work during his short life. Taking August Macke as its starting point, the volume explores the mystique surrounding the members of the 27 Club through contributions from the fields of art history, literary studies, musicology, number theory and popular culture.
