The Ancient Jerusalem Hymnal, known in Georgian as Iadgari, presents the first complete English translation of the proper hymns for the major annual feasts celebrated in the city around the end of the sixth century. Preserving thousands of lines of theological poetry, the Hymnal is among the largest early Christian chant corpora, yet it has remained long overlooked because its Greek original is lost and the collection survives only in Old Georgian translations produced in early medieval Palestine. Stephen J. Shoemaker's translation offers a continuous, readable rendering of the festal cycle based on its most important witness, Sinai geor. 18, which best preserves Jerusalem's public worship with minimal later "monasticizing" revisions. The result is an unusually direct window onto early Christian devotion and theology in the Holy Land, introduced and annotated to illuminate its language, theology, and liturgical setting.
