Szenen aus Lea Hopps Videoarbeit "Rengashis' Room" bilden den Nukleus der Publikation: In Text und Bild werden die vielfältigen Dynamiken und Störungen in den Blick genommen, die Begegnungen in und zwischen Sprachen und Medien innewohnen. Der Filmwissenschaftler Sulgi Lie reflektiert in einer "kleinen Theorie der Untertitel" künstlerische Strategien der Text-Bild-Gegenüberstellung und deren ästhetische, programmatische und politische Implikationen. Ein Gespräch zwischen Hopp und der Übersetzungswissenschaftlerin und Untertitelspezialistin Carol O'Sullivan beleuchtet die vielfältigen Funktionen, die Untertitel im Laufe ihrer Geschichte erfüllt haben.

Taking the dynamics of multilingual encounters as its starting point, At the Bottom of the Frame addresses the complexities of subtitling, the challenges associated with translation processes and the multifaceted relationship between cinematic and linguistic content. Visual material from Lea Hopp's video work Rengashis' Room enters into dialogue with an essay by Sulgi Lie on artistic strategies of text-image juxtaposition and their theoretical implications, while a conversation between Hopp and Carol O'Sullivan sheds light on the manifold functions fulfilled by subtitles throughout their history.
