Biografie

Harry Sinclair Lewis wurde am 7. Februar 1885 in Sauk Center (Minnesota/USA) geboren. Der Arztsohn besuchte die Universität Yale. Anschließend arbeitete er als Journalist und im Verlagswesen. Er nahm 1906 an dem von Upton Sinclair initiierten kooperativen, utopisch-sozialistischen Experiment "Helicon Home Colony" teil. Lewis gilt als bedeutender humanistischer Realist in der Literatur: In seinen zahlreichen gesellschaftskritischen Romanen entwarf er ein satirisches Bild des amerikanischen Mittelstandes und analysierte scharfsinnig die intellektuelle und charakterliche Deformierung sowie den Abbau zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen jener Bürger, die sich als wahre Repräsentanten der amerikanischen Nation auszugeben versuchten. Der Autor erhielt 1930 als erster Bürger der USA den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Harry Sinclair Lewis verbrachte seine letzten Lebensjahre in Florenz und starb am 10. Januar 1951 in Rom.
