In this book, the author uses an ethnographic approach to examine the topic of shame dynamics in residential care for adolescents. Expressions of shame by adolescents, their care workers and the researchers' perception of shame are used as reference points to identify contrasts and structural connections in the data. The author also includes approaches from the sociology of emotion and affect studies, which emphasise that a dichotomous understanding of affects as either positive or negative does not do justice to their complex functions. In this way, the book sheds light on the social meaning of affects and demonstrates the value of affect research for social pedagogy.
