Klappentext
This fictional story is about life in Tijuana in the mid-1970s, the struggles of a family there, the dangers along the border, and the life in hiding of undocumented immigrants living in los Estados Unidos.
In 1974, fourteen-year-old Ernesto loves to draw, but his father thinks it is a waste of time. So, as often as he can, Ernesto leaves his home in the Tijuana, México, neighborhood of Pancho Villa, and walks or runs to la Playa de Tijuana where he sketches the ocean, nearby houses, and scenes of the city. One afternoon while sketching, he sees a pack of dogs attack a lone dog. The victim is left badly wounded. Ernesto meets Raúl, who helps him nurse the dog, whom he names Oro. The three become friends, often walking together between the city and la playa along the dangerous border with los Estados Unidos . When circumstances change in the life of Raúl, and he needs to find better paying work, el Norte beckons. Later, after tragedy strikes Pancho Villa, Ernesto, too, seeks to earn more money for his family and escape from his father. Can el Norte be his solution? Ernesto cannot know the perils and struggles awaiting him as he crosses the border and travels north.
