An avant-gardist beyond the media spotlight: a comprehensive appreciation of Helmut Federle's painting

With insight and subtlety, Robert Fleck explores the work of this uncompromising artist, who ranks among the leading international figures in contemporary abstract painting. Geometry and emotion, together with a reinvention of American Abstract Expressionism, define the paintings of Helmut Federle, whose pared-back, powerful formal language has proved highly influential.

The singularity and international significance of Federle's work are explored alongside the artist's biography and the key influences on his practice: from the existentialist ethos of the Beat Generation and the theory of form taught at the School of Arts and Crafts in Basel to Minimal Art and the collecting of non-European art. Robert Fleck's account is accompanied by quotations from the artist drawn from their conversations, while short texts by renowned figures from the art world sketch a multifaceted portrait of Helmut Federle's outstanding importance.
