While there have been studies of these individual figures, or generic histories of their contributions, no volume offers an analytic commentary on their principal writings. Most works that address this period treat it either as an historical artifact, or attempt to assimilate it to contemporary issues in social thought. Few consider seriously the alternative represented by Augustine. The goal of this volume is to present the principal works of these authors for reconsideration by contemporary readers, in order to urge an encounter with the originality of their contribution to political philosophy.
