Biography
Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck wurde am 29. August 1862 in Gent als Sohn wohlhabender französischsprachiger Eltern geboren. Während seiner Studienzeit schrieb er Gedichte und kurze Erzählungen, die er später vernichtete und von denen nur Fragmente erhalten sind. Nach dem Ende seines Jurastudiums lebte er einige Monate in Paris, wo er einige Mitglieder der neuen literarischen Bewegung des Symbolismus kennenlernte, darunter Stéphane Mallarmé und Villiers de l'Isle-Adam. 1890 wurde er mit seinem Schauspiel "La princesse Maleine" berühmt. 1911 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur. 1930 erwarb er ein Schloss in Nizza, dem er den Namen Orlamonde aus seinen "Quinze Chansons" gab. Dieses Haus wird heute als Hotel Palais Maeterlinck geführt. 1932 wurde er vom belgischen König Albert I. geadelt und zum Grafen ernannt. 1939 floh er in die USA, wo er bis 1947 lebte. Er starb am 6. Mai 1949 in Nizza.§Die Hauptthemen des belgischen Schriftstellers waren der Tod und der Sinn des Lebens. Sein Schauspiel Pelléas et Mélisande gilt als Hauptwerk des Symbolismus und wurde mehrfach vertont, unter anderem als Oper von Claude Debussy.
