W Mark Richardson: After Evolution, Gebunden

How did Anglican thinkers respond when modern cosmology and evolutionary theory upended traditional Christian narratives?

The emergence of modern scientific cosmology profoundly reshaped the intellectual framework of Christian theology. The traditional narrative of a divinely ordered cosmos disrupted by human disobedience once provided the foundation for doctrinal interpretation and religious practice. In contrast, contemporary assumptions about a universe evolving over billions of years through processes of contingency and complexity have destabilized these conceptual structures and raised urgent questions about their viability.

In this rigorous historical study, Mark Richardson examines how Anglican theologians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries confronted this challenge. Focusing on Liberal Anglo-Catholic and British Modernist responses, Richardson examines their attempts to integrate evolutionary theory--particularly the concept of emergent complexity--into Christian doctrine, with a special emphasis on the interpretation of Original Sin.

By tracing these attempts to reconcile evolutionary consciousness with enduring theological commitments, this work illuminates a pivotal moment in modern intellectual history. Far from rejecting scientific insights, these thinkers sought to reimagine the human person and the saving work of Christ within a dynamic, evolving cosmos. Their engagement offers a compelling case study in the ongoing dialogue between theology and science.
