Junior Architects traces the pursuit of equity in architecture and design education through historical analysis, critical theory, and comparative case studies from across contemporary US contexts. At a moment when architecture schools are grappling with urgent calls for racial and economic justice amid growing political backlash, this incisive volume asks how early-learning interventions can expand access to the profession and ways it is taught, valued, and practiced. It situates the current crisis in design education within a long arc of exclusion in American higher education, showing how elite institutions, accreditation systems, and resource-intensive pedagogies have reinforced narrow authorship of the built environment.

Organized into three parts-Institutions, Instruction, and Practice-and anchored by case studies, the collection moves from examining how universities, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and alternative programs are redefining recruitment and retention, to investigating pedagogical strategies that shift from gatekeeping to genuine civic empowerment, and finally to exploring how professional pathways might be restructured to prioritize pluralism, reciprocity, and public purpose.

Far from a triumphalist account, this is a field report from contested terrain, offering perspectives from both within and alongside institutions.
