AutorenporträtJohn Mandeville gibt der Wissenschaft auch heute noch Rätsel auf. Über seine Person gibt es zahlreiche Theorien und wenig gesicherte Erkenntnisse. Vermutlich wurde er in St. Albans in England geboren. Von 1322 bis 1356 reiste er, seinen eigenen Angaben zufolge, nach Palästina und Fernost und ließ sich später als Arzt unter dem Namen Jean de Bourgogne in Lüttich nieder. Sein Buch über "Die Reisen des Ritters Mandeville" - das ursprünglich keinen Titel trug - war jedenfalls einer der ersten und zugleich einer der populärsten Bestseller des Mittelalters - beliebter noch als Marco Polos "Beschreibung der Welt".§Notes:
