An intimate perspective revealing Picabia's life and work through the metaphor of the night.

A complex and controversial artist, Francis Picabia (1879- 1953) remains an artist whose work still has much left to be uncovered. "To have clean ideas you have to change them like shirts" and, throughout his life, Picabia moved in and out of different artistic currents, experimenting with Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Dadaism, Surrealism and Abstractionism, until the post-war period in which the painter concluded his work in symphony with the Informal. His aversion to aligning himself with any specific artistic movement led him to merge techniques and themes as needed, resulting in a collection of distinct and divergent works that defy attribution to a single painter due to their stark stylistic disparities.

Edited by Anne Berest, who is also a writer and the artist's great-granddaughter, this publication features over 150 works from prestigious international public and private collections. Divided into ten sections, each linked to the theme of the night as a metaphor for life, the book provides a comprehensive overview of Picabia's career and his eclectic style and takes the reader on a journey to discover the artist's life, especially his nights, because, as Anne Berest writes, "Picabia lived by day and by night, to live twice as long as others". Through critical essays, paintings, works on paper drawings, videos, archival materials and thematic insights, this book invites the reader to immerse himself in Picabia's intimate, enigmatic and mysterious world, capturing the complexity of an artist who continually reinvented himself.
