Klappentext
The Loyal Democrat is the first comprehensive examination of the life of Cameron Morrison, the "Good Roads Governor" of North Carolina. Eric Medlin covers Morrison's life from his birth in rural Richmond County, North Carolina, through his time as a Red Shirt terrorist during Reconstruction, and the rest of his six-decade political career. Medlin traces Morrison's views on race, his conservative reputation prior to 1920, and how his stances evolved as he captured the governor's mansion and spent more than any previous governor on improving roads and educational buildings. He also covers Morrison's years out of office and his time as a US senator and congressman. Along the way, he tells the story of a modernizing North Carolina, including developments in Charlotte, Morrison's hometown.
Through the life story of a leader with a fifty-year career in state and local politics, The Loyal Democrataddresses the rise of the Jim Crow South and the politics of southern governments during the nadir of race relations. Medlin also engages with North Carolina's history of economic development and its reputation, deserved or not, as a uniquely progressive southern state, including sections on government building programs, the fight against fascism, Morrison's ability to achieve his policy goals, and questions of modernity and ideological evolution among southern political leaders from the 1880s to the 1950s.
