Leonard war einer der erfolgreichsten amerikanischen Autoren, und die "New York Times" nannte ihn schlicht den "größten lebenden Kriminalautor". Etliche seiner Romane wurden mit Publikums- und Kritikererfolg verfilmt, darunter "Schnappt Shorty (mit John Travolta, Gene Hackman und Danny De Vito), "Zuckerschnute" ("Out of Sight") mit George Clooney und Jennifer Lopez. Quentin Tarantinos "Jackie Brown" basiert auf "Rum Punch". Elmore Leonard war fünffacher Vater und neunfacher Großvater und lebte mit seiner zweiten Frau in Birmingham, Michigan. Im Jahr 2012 wurde er mit der National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters ausgezeichnet.
