Klappentext
Despite often being deemed 'an invisible community' in Spain, Chinese citizens have in recent years had an increasing presence on Spanish screens. Whilst some questionable representations of the Chinese community arose throughout the late 1990s, with titles such as La fuente amarilla / The Yellow Fountain (dir. Miguel Santesmases, 1999) and Torrente: El brazo tonto de la ley / Torrente: the Dumb Arm of the Law (dir. Santiago Segura, 1998) courting controversy, a roster of more recent texts have started to portray the various complex attributes of Chinese citizens in Spain. In the first comprehensive study of representations of Chinese cultures on Spanish screens, Delphi May examines the complex identity politics at play in a number of Spanish films and television programmes, defining crucial points wherein acts of kindness, tolerance, rejection, and violence all play a vital part in offering an enlightening portrait of contemporary relations between Spanish and Chinese citizens. Delphi May completed her PhD in Hispanic Studies in 2020, which was awarded by the University of Exeter. She was runner up in the Annual AHGBI Publication Prize, which has enabled her to publish her doctoral thesis as a monograph.
