D Scott Phoenix: The Second Law, Gebunden

Klappentext

A bold new evolutionary explanation for the irresistible rise of artificial intelligence, and a survival strategy for humanity, grounded in the history of life on earth
In 2025, D. Scott Phoenix asked a room of CEOs, Nobel laureates, and heads of state a question: "Who here believes there's more than a 10 percent chance that AI will kill most of the people on Earth within the next twenty years?"

The hands of almost every AI expert in the room went up.

And the next day, they went back to building it.

Phoenix used to be one of them. He cofounded one of the early AI companies and spent a decade trying to build it safely and responsibly before selling the company to Google. Along the way, he came to believe that the forces driving our inexorable race toward artificial intelligence stem from the deepest patterns of the universe. The same pressures that forged the first stars and cells are now forging minds from silicon. Phoenix calls this the Entropy Trap, and we are the first life forms able to notice the trap-and find a way out.

The history of life provides clues to surviving the gauntlet. Each crisis that could have ended life instead transformed it into something new.

AI is the next crisis. What will we and our civilization become on the other side? Phoenix argues that the answer is not to surrender to the machines or try to destroy them but instead to expand our conceptions of humanity.

The Second Law doesn't promise utopia. It offers something rarer: a clear-eyed and deeply human path through the most challenging transition humanity will ever face. It is a warning about the dangers ahead, a blueprint for how to survive them, and ultimately a love letter to Phoenix's two daughters-and to the world they will inherit.
