Luke roots the founding narrative of his Gospel and Acts in the history of Israel, weaving the two inseparably together. In doing so, he establishes continuity with Israel's past while also meeting the expectations of Greco-Roman historiography. Abraham, Moses, and David stand at the center of this project: they appear as remembered figures from Israel's foundational past - for instance in father-centered historical retrospectives - and are also invoked to support theological claims in hymnic, narrative, and argumentative contexts.

Carolin Ziethe examines the function of these three father figures within what Knut Backhaus has called Luke's Gedächtnisgemälde, his intentional historiography in the sense developed by Hans-Joachim Gehrke. Drawing on cultural memory studies (Jan Assmann) and on research into identity figures and exempla, she shows how Abraham, Moses, and David, as personified elements of the community's origin story, give insight into how the Lukan community understood itself.

All three father figures are shaped toward the present of the world Luke narrates. Through them, Luke anchors the divine work of salvation - as it unfolds in and through Christ - deep in the history of Israel, and at the same time gives that history a distinctively Christological profile. The three portraits do double duty: outwardly, they support Luke's apologetic and legitimizing strategy toward the Greco-Roman world; inwardly, they serve his community as a source of identity, reassurance, and practical orientation within Luke's vision of the past.
