The Small House at Allington by Anthony Trollope is a novel about love, pride, and social class, set in the English countryside. It follows Lily Dale, a sweet and intelligent young woman who lives in the "small house" on the estate of her wealthy uncle, Squire Dale. Lily falls in love with Adolphus Crosbie, a charming but ambitious civil servant. He proposes to her but later jilts her to marry the wealthy and socially advantageous Lady Alexandrina de Courcy. Despite her heartbreak, Lily refuses to marry anyone else, remaining faithful to her first love even after his betrayal. Meanwhile, her sister Bell Dale finds happiness with Dr. Crofts, a kind and steady man, despite the Squire's initial disapproval. The novel explores the consequences of emotional choices, the limits of ambition, and the quiet strength of personal integrity. Though filled with romantic plotlines, Trollope also offers sharp social commentary and subtle satire of Victorian manners and values.
Biography
More from Anthony Trollope
