Biography (Alice Walker)

Alice Walker, geboren 1944 in Eatonton, Georgia, stammt aus einer armen Landarbeiterfamilie. Dank eines Begabtenstipendiums konnte sie ein Literaturstudium absolvieren. Sie ist eine der profiliertesten und politisch engagiertesten Autorinnen des modernen Amerika. Sie war in der Bürgerrechts- und Frauenbewegung aktiv, lehrte an verschiedenen Universitäten und zeichnete ihre politischen Erfahrungen in zahlreichen Essays auf. Ihr literarisches Schaffen umfasst Lyrik, Romane und Erzählungen. Ihr bisher größter Romanerfolg war Die Farbe Lila (1982, dt. 1984), ausgezeichnet mit dem Pulitzer-Preis und mit dem American Book Award, verfilmt von Steven Spielberg.
