Biografie
Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) stammte aus einer puritanischen Neuengland-Familie. Er war Journalist, arbeitete als Zollinspektor und wurde Konsul in Liverpool. Nach einer mehrjährigen Europa-Reise in die Heimat zurückgekehrt, starb er, erschüttert über den amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg.
