Gil Evans: Gil Evans & Ten on Super Audio CD
Gil Evans & Ten
The SACD uses a higher digital resolution than the audio CD and also offers the possibility to store multi-channel sound (surround sound). To enjoy the music in high-end quality, a special SACD player is required. Thanks to the hybrid function, most of the products marked "SACD" in our store can also be played on conventional CD players. In this case, however, the sound does not differ from that of a normal CD. In case of deviations, we point this out separately (non-hybrid).

Sound:stereo & multichannel (Hybrid)
Already known for his arrangements in the Claude Thornhill band and the Miles Davis Nonet during the 1940s, Gil Evans went to several important collaborations with Davis between 1957 and 1960. It was also in 1957, thanks to Miles's urging, that he received an opportunity to do his own date on Prestige.
This tentet utilizes five brass (including French horn) and bassoon; marks his recording debut as a pianist; and features the alto saxophone of Lee Konitz (his colleague in both the Thornhill and Davis units of the Forties) and Steve Lacy on soprano saxophone, at a time before John Coltrane had yet to popularize that instrument among modern reedmen.
With Jimmy Cleveland, Bart Varsalona, Louis Mucci, John Carisi, Jake Koven, Willie Ruff, Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, Dave Kurtzer, Paul Chambers, Nick Stabulas, Jo Jones
