Janis Joplin left us forty years ago this fall. Beverly Jo Scott revisits in her own inimitable way the classics of her longtime sister-in-arms, alongside lesser-known Joplin gems and a handful of songs by Joplin's favorite artists (Dylan, Otis Redding, Billie Holiday.). B. J. at her peak, burning the stage with an urgency that makes you think the spirit of Janis is watching over her.
The first time I heard the voice of Janis Joplin, I was 11 years old and it was 1970 in Mobile, Alabama. I scrambled to the radio to raise the volume while my mother yelled at me to turn that crazy stuff off. I listened to the radio, not my mother. "Bobby McGee" buzzed through me like an electric shock. There was this girl who had a strange raspy voice like me! On the radio! At first I thought her name was Pearl, but later I discovered that this was the title of her L. P. and that the singer, Janis Joplin, had died of an overdose of heroine.
For years I've wanted to create a tribute performance to this ghost of a girl who so influenced my preadolescence. I wanted to show another side of Janis than that of the whiskey bottle and the rebel attitude. She was educated, intelligent and avant-garde. Of early blues women, she had the knowledge of an anthropologist. She created her own style of clothes and invented a fashion that has lasted in the music world to this day. She is still the ultimate reference for women in rock. Her passionate way of singing encouraged me to bare my naked soul to thousands of people, whether it embarrassed them or not. She was born in the south like me, bisexual like me, non-racist like me, adored the blues like me and sang whatever pleased her, be it Gershwin or rock and soul. like me. But I survived the foolish acts of my youth. tragically she did not. At 11 years of age, I began to believe that with my guitar and my broken alto voice I could become an artist.
A few decades later I am paying homage to the young woman who gave me that belief. In the grand tradition of Janis Joplin, I do this with joy, humor and emotion. Let the legend live on. ~ B. J. Scott ~ Born in Alabama, in the heart of the deep south, Beverly Joe Scott grew up with rock, blues and country. Her keen and heartfelt writing, the emotional weight of her voice make her one of the most popular American artists in Europe. Beverly Jo Scott is living proof that rock music still has a heart and a soul.
,,Eine intensive CD, die durch den kreativen Umgang mit den Vorlagen gewinnt. So müssen Cover-Versionen klingen!" (Good Times, 02-03 / 2011)
