Product Information
Nikolay Lysenko went down in history as the founder of the Ukrainian national composer school. His works combining traditions of the Ukrainian folk theater and the Russian classics, have became a base of the Ukrainian opera art. Heroic opera «Taras Bulba» was written on the plot of the well-known story of N. Gogol with the same name. It took composer ten years to finish the opera. During lifetime the composer hasn't seen the opera on a scene. The premiere took place only after the Great October socialist revolution on October, 4th, 1924 on a scene of the Kharkov opera theater.
The opera has been conceived as a deeply national work, singing of a heroic feat of the people struggling for the independence (courageous Cossacks against the Polish aggressors). The composers idea was based on principles of Russian patriotic opera traditions. This opera is filled with spirit of the Ukrainian folklore, its music draws original national characters and poetical images of the nature.
For many decades now, Taras Bulba, the greatest work by Nikolay Lysenko, has been one of the leading productions of the Taras Shevchenko National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Ukraine.
