Simon Rattles tiefe Verbundenheit mit der Musik Benjamin Brittens ist dem großen Dirigenten und derzeitigen Chef der Berliner Philharmoniker in die Wiege gelegt worden. Immerhin sind die Beiden Landsleute. Benjamin Britten, der als »britischer Orpheus« zu den bedeutendsten Komponisten Englands zählt, stand schon ganz am Anfang von Rattles Karriere im Zentrum seiner musikalischen Arbeit. Als der Dirigent das City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in den 80er und 90er Jahren zu einem Ensemble von Weltrang schmiedete, entstanden im Zuge dieser Entwicklungen Britten-Einspielungen, die heute noch Referenzstatus besitzen. Bis ins Jahr 1982 gehen die hier versammelten Aufnahmen zurück, und sie reichen bis in Rattles aktuelle Berliner Zeit.
