Nach erfolgreichen Ausflügen als Teil der Folk-Supergroup Monsters Of Folk und als männlicher Part des Duos She & Him ist M. Ward wieder auf Solopfaden unterwegs. Das bereits 6. Soloalbum umfasst 12 atemberaubende Songs und wurde mit 18 verschiedenen Musikern, u. a. mit Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes), Zooey Deschanel (She & Him) oder Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) aufgenommen.
Inspiriert durch sein dauerhaftes Touren und somit verbundenem Reisen, erklärt er die Entstehung seines neuen Werkes "A Wasteland Companion" als Reflexion der Zeit zwischen dem letzten Album und Jetzt: "Between now and when I made Hold Time there has been a lot of travelling which requires a lot of reckoning with what to leave behind and what to carry - material and otherwise - and thinking about what I want versus what I need, creatively and otherwise. I wanted to get a reflection of that on the album. It was a process of stripping away my security blanket, which is the same four walls I always record in."
