Über William Youngs Werdegang ist wenig bekannt. Seine letzten Lebensjahre verbrachte der „Engellendische Musicant“ in Innsbruck, am Hofe des musikliebenden Erzherzogs Ferdinand Karl. Ausgezeichnete Referenzen dokumentieren schon damals den Ruf des herausragenden Musikers. Sogar vor der schwedischen Königin Christina, die 1655 auf ihrer Reise nach Rom in Innsbruck weilte, hat der englische Gambist William Young musiziert, und er brachte die unkonventionelle, gerade abgedankte schwedische Königin dazu, in erzherzöglicher Gesellschaft alle Etikette und Formalismen vergessend, zu seiner Musik spontan zu tänzeln. Ein Zeitgenosse bezeichnete damals Young als besten englischen Gambist in Europa: Wurden die englischen Violisten ohnehin auf dem Kontinent überall hoch gelobt, war dieser Superlativ noch eine Steigerung ihrer allgemeinen Verehrung. Selbst posthum gibt es noch viele Dokumente für die hohe Wertschätzung unseres englischen Gambisten. Jean Rousseau reiht Young unter die führenden Gambisten Europas ein. Und darüber hinaus zeigt sich William Young auch noch als der bedeutendste englische Komponist in den Jahren vor H. Purcell, J. Jenkins und W. Lawes. In seinem überlieferten Werk glänzt er gleich mit zwei Superlativen als Entdecker oder Erfinder: Die 1653er Sammlung ist die erste Sonatensammlung eines Engländers, erst 1697 von Henry Purcell wieder aufgegriffen. Sein uns heute erhaltenes Werk ist stilistisch extrem vielfältig, er erweist sich als ein anpassungsfähiger, wandlungsfähiger und für die Entwicklungen seiner Zeit aufgeschlossener Komponist.

Little is known about William Young’s early development as a musician. This English composer and gambist spent the last years of his life in Innsbruck, at the court of the music-loving Archduke Ferdinand Karl. Excellent references even then documented this outstanding musician’s renown. As a gambist, William Young even performed before the Swedish Queen Christina, who stayed in Innsbruck in 1655 on her journey to Rome, and moved the unconventional Swedish queen, who had recently renounced her throne, to dance spontaneously to his music, thus violating all the rules of etiquette and formalisms required in archducal company. One contemporary at the time designated Young as the best English gambist in Europe: English violists may have been highly praised everywhere on the Continent, but this top tribute represented an intensification of the universal esteem in which such musicians were held. Even posthumously many documents attesting to the high esteem of our English gambist continued to be produced. Jean Rousseau ranked Young among Europe’s leading gambists. Moreover, William Young proved to be the most important English composer during the years prior to Purcell, Jenkins, and Lawes. In his extant oeuvre he shines with two superlatives as a discoverer and an inventor: the collection of his sonatas from 1653 was the first such collection by an Englishman and would first be employed again by Henry Purcell in 1697. Young’s oeuvre as transmitted to us today is highly varied in its style, and he proves to be an adaptable, versatile composer open to the developments of his times.
