Barockes aus der Provinz
Die kleine Gemeinde Großfahner in Thüringen besitzt wohl mit über 600 handschriftlichen Kompositionen von etwa 50 thüringischen und sächsischen Kantoren, Organisten sowie einigen Hofkapellmeistern die größte Handschriftensammlung des 17./18.Jahrhunderts im mitteldeutschen Raum. Die meisten „Kirchenstücke“ wurden vom damaligen Kantor Abraham Nagel selbst kopiert oder im Tausch erworben. Mit weiteren Kopien aus der Nachbargemeinde Eschenbergen und 30 eigenen Kompositionen ergänze Nagel diesen Fundus noch. So bietet diese Sammlung geistlicher Kompositionen aus der Zeit zwischen 1650 und 1750 einen sehr guten Einblick in die intensive Pflege von Figuralmusik zweier mitteldeutscher Dörfer von der Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts bis zum Tode Johann Sebastian Bachs. Die Sopranistin Maria Jonas hat 8 Kantaten ausgesucht, die eindrucksvoll zeigen, dass nicht nur an Höfen anspruchsvoll musiziert wurde.

Baroque Music from Thuringia

The little community of Großfahner in Thuringia with its more than six hundred manuscript compositions by some fifty famous and not-so-well-known Thuringian and Saxon church music directors has in its possession what is the largest manuscript collection of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Central Germany. Most of these »church pieces« were copied by the then church music director Abraham Nagel or acquired by him in exchange. Nagel added to this collection with further copies from the neighboring community of Eschenbergen and with compositions of his own. This collection of sacred compositions from the period between 1650 and 1750 thus offers an excellent look at the intensive cultivation of figural music in two Central German villages from the middle of the seventeenth century until Johann Sebastian Bach’s death. The soprano Maria Jonas has selected eight cantatas offering impressive proof of the fact that demanding music was performed even beyond the royal courts.
